KC Finds Friday: Urban Table - Handmade in the Heartland

KC Finds Friday: Urban Table

Last week I had the extreme pleasure of sitting down with executive chef George of bread and butter concepts.  B&B owns several fabulous restaurants in the KC area including Urban Table located in Prairie Village.  When you walk in to Urban Table you might feel as though you have been transported to a quaint little place in the french countryside, the decor is so perfectly chosen and tastefully done that you are completely engaged in the experience of being there.  Booth seats have soft pillows that beckon you to stay all afternoon chatting with your besties and enjoying some of the fabulous fare.  I love the mix of lighting and then the more industrial pieces, like metal tables, that bring the space a taste of modernity next to all the farmhouse touches.  Needless to say you're gonna want to go, and I haven't even gotten to the food yet!
We started out with the charcuterie board, and boy was i glad that George saw to it that we tasted that! Most of you know that if there is a cheese plate on a menu i'm gonna order it, i'd venture to say this might be the best cheese plate i've eaten in Kansas City! Big claim, i know.  But seriously, house made mustard,  candied walnuts, house cured meat, fresh made tapenade, grilled bread, house roasted peppers and a fresh picked onion all accompany delicious cheeses- i'm telling you its a cheese lovers dream.

Urban Table strives to be the local neighborhood spot that you just want to be at, and as i've already says it delivers on vibe but the real draw is the food.  Spectacular pairings of flavors are their specialty, in my opinion, and they are doing things that aren't on other menus in the KC area.  Take for example the napa garden salad, again one of the most unique and delicious salads i've had in a while includes romaine, swiss chard, kale, roasted peppers, golden beets, dates, goat cheese, toasted almonds, and topped with a sunflower vinaigrette.  Have you ever eaten dates in a salad? Its delicious, i promise.

The beautiful deviled eggs were also tasty and something i can imagine ordering for brunch, the mix has dijon and capers and then you have your choice of topping with celery, bacon or house-cured salmon. Can we just talk about brunch? Because we don't go out on Sundays i'm always sad to miss such a lovely meal, seeing as how most KC restaurants only offer brunch on Sundays. Urban Table actually offers brunch on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays! yay!

We finished our meal with a dish that knocks your socks off.  The short ribs are braised in whiskey and served with poblano grits, crispy brussels sprouts and a fabulous plum gastrique.  Everything in this dish was really delicious and the textures were perfectly paired- the crispiness of the brussels next to the creaminess of the grits and the fall off the bone tenderness of the meat all melt in your mouth.

The kitchen at Urban Table is a scratch kitchen and its comes through in their dishes with added flavors and unique combinations that are both surprising and delicious. They are committed to using fresh and local ingredients in their dishes and change their menu frequently, leaving on some of the favorites.  They strive to be your neighborhood cafe that you want to meet with friends and stay for awhile and they truly deliver.

Bread and Butter Concepts also operates Gram & Dun and Taco Republic which you may remember from my reviews.  They also own BRGR kitchen that i'm excited to try, it seems like everything they do meets and goes beyond my expectations.
