The Karbaumer Farm Community Share Program Begins!
Today we went to the “first gathering” for our CSA program.
Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Here are the basics: a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season. Our CSA is with the Karbaumer Farm and we will receive a box of veggies each week for 22 weeks! The farm is only 10 miles from our apartment and on every tuesday i will go and pick up our share. For their CSA participants our farmers have gatherings like the one we attended today where everyone was invited to the farm for a potluck dinner and to tour the gardens & farm. There is a few things i’m really excited about:
1. I LOVE that the distance my food travels from farm to table is literally only 10 miles and that it is grown by using organic practices.
2. I love that i now have a real relationship with my food and those who grow it, our culture has become so removed from where their food comes from- do you even think about that tomatoe when you pick it up at the grocery store? I was amazed last week when i bought tomatoes at the farmers market and made a tart for my party and the tomatoes were so flavorful! And like Micheal Pollan says it’s all about relationships- soil to plant, plant to person. The reason so much of our produce tastes so bland is because the soil its mass produced in has been so depleted!
3. It’s also really cool that our farmers use horses to plow and speak german (matt gets a little practice when talking to Klaus)
4. I am really excited to have a more diversified summer menu- I’ve made a goal to find new recipes for whatever produce comes into my basket. That’s one of the cool things- i will probably get things that i’m not familar with which will broaden our recipe file and tastebuds!
So i hope you enjoy some of the pictures i took today at the farm!
