I have a small obsession with kitchen supplies.  I signed up to be a Demarle representative just to get the discount, if that tells you anything.  One day when i have a ginormous kitchen i will fill every cabinet with the beautiful trays, dishes, tools and gadgets that fill my thoughts. Matt gets on to me for having tools or items in our kitchen that never get used, and i’m not gonna lie there are things in there that may not be on the daily, weekly or even monthly rotation. So when i can pull something out that hasn’t been used in a while it makes me darn happy, and my cookie press happens to be one of those items.  Are these heart cookies not the cutest little guys?! I used my wilton cookie press, its like the basic of the basic but it works beautifully.  I think i got mine at JoAnn but its on amazon for like $9!

I also love a good family recipe and thats exactly what these sugar wafers are.  Matt’s mom sent me the recipe and as soon as he bit into one he said “oh yeah these are my moms sugar cookies, they remind me of being a kid”.  Isn’t it fun how food can do that, send us back.  Anyway They are Vicki’s recipe and they are delicious. She said that she would color the dough red and green at Christmas time, so i decided to do shades of red/pink for valentines day, put them in my cookie press and use the heart shape.  I’m loving how they turned out, they are easy, the recipe makes a ton and they are small enough you don’t feel guilty eating a few.

And can we please just talk about this two tiered silver vintage tray for a second? It was given to me this Christmas by a sweet friend, probably one of the most thoughtful and unexpected gifts i received and i am so in love with it.  I’m sure you all will be seeing it in posts for a long time to come. Thanks Katie, you are too sweet. 🙂

Vicki’s Sugar Wafers
makes 100 small cookies
These cookies are a delicate sugar cookie, the dough is very similar to spritz cookie dough, it is not good for rolling out, but its great for using a cookie press or just shaping into balls.
Ingredients:
1 cup butter
1 cup shortening
1 cup powdered sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
4 cups of flour
food coloring of your choice (i used the wilton gel food coloring)
Directions:
Cream together the butter, shortening, and both sugars.  Then add 2 eggs. Add in the cream of tartar, soda, vanilla, & salt and mix thoroughly.  Finally add the flour in 2 parts.  If you’d like to add food add it now and mix in thoroughly.  To get four different shades of red/pink i first divided up my dough into four balls and then put the smaller portions back in the mixer individually. I added a small amount of pink, mixed it up and then adjusted my amount of food coloring for additional colors- adding less for a lighter pink and more for a darker pink & the red.
Preheat your oven to 350. Once your dough is prepared you can shape it into 1″ balls or you can put it into a cookie press and press them out like i did, i use THIS one.  Make sure there is a little bit of space in between each cookie because they do spread a little bit.  If you make them into balls dip the end of a glass in melted butter, then sugar and then flatten each ball.  If you use a press you could sprinkle sugar over the cookies after you press them, i should have but totally missed that step! Bake for 7-10 minutes, I baked mine right at 7 minutes and would not have wanted them in any longer, they are so small it would be easy to over-bake and make them too crunchy. Let them cool and enjoy!
