Summer Fruit Kabobs & Dip with DIY Washi Tape Toothpicks

Summer time means lots of friends gathering in backyards, on patios and by pools.  When I entertain I usually make really simple recipes that don’t require being in the kitchen away from my guests.  However no one said simple has to mean boring! I love fresh fruit in the summer, who doesn’t? I mean I probably eat at least 10 watermelon a summer, not joking. 🙂 So when serving fresh fruit to friends how about making little mini kabobs? And even better pop some washi tape on to toothpicks and you’ve got the cutest darn kabobs you ever did see. The citrus fruit dip in this post is delicious however my nutella fruit dip is still my favorite :).

Anyone can make these adorable washi tape toothpicks, you’ll need toothpicks, scissors, and washi tape. I bought these unique shaped bamboo toothpicks at target and I really liked the shape of them for wrapping the washi tape because they have a flat front instead of round.

I placed a piece of washi tape on the toothpick and then trimmed it with scissors right above where the toothpick curved out to be thicker. I only wanted the tape on the strait skinny part of the toothpick. I tried to place the center of the washi tape along the toothpick and then I wrapped the sides around to the back. So very easy friends and in minutes you’ve got the cutest toothpicks you have ever seen!

All different combos of fruit are great. I like to pick fruits that are a variety of colors to really bring some interest to the display.  I used kiwi, pineapple, strawberries, watermelon, blueberries, and bananas.  I love how the colors of the fruit and the bright colors of the washi tape compliment each other!
This fruit dip is loosely based on the fruit dip they serve at Jason’s Deli, I mean couldn’t you just drink that stuff? I love my version, its a little thicker and just as sweet. 🙂

Citrus flavored fruit dip

Makes 3 cups of dip

Ingredients:
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon orange zest
1 teaspoon orange juice
2 cups fresh whipped cream

Directions:

Combine the sour cream and brown sugar and whisk until the sugar has dissolved. Add the orange zest and juice and mix to combine. Fold in the whipped cream and carefully mix until all lumps are smoothed out. Put in the fridge for a few hours. Enjoy with fresh fruit like strawberries, pineapple, blueberries, kiwi and bananas.

What else would you use these toothpicks for? I made some caprese bits I’ll be sharing later this week where I just used red washi tape.  I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments!
